What is vacuum metallization?

With the development of modern technologies, the approach to activities related to applying protective coatings to various surfaces and products has changed. An increasingly popular method is vacuum metallization, i.e. Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). PVD causes the metal to be vaporized or ejected using a high-energy electron beam and deposited evenly on the surface of the workpieces. This means that vacuum metallization procedures are used in the preparation of aesthetic decorations, as well as for coating functional objects. Therefore, we use PVD in electronics, automotive, medical and decorative industries.

Variety of applications and high resistance, i.e. vacuum metallization in practice

Scientifically speaking, vacuum metallization is a physical process that allows thin coatings of metal to be deposited on selected components in a fully controlled manner. Thanks to this, the risk of blemishes and contamination on the decorated surface is minimal.

It is worth adding that the removal of particles of the selected metal and its deposition on the elements that we want to cover with it is a natural process in the case of PVD, and is characterized by high purity and is carried out at room temperature. Thanks to this, we can conveniently apply a thin layer of metal to any substrate.

In order to obtain a perfectly durable surface as a result of vacuum metallization, we can also use plasma, which prepares the substrate to accept the metal layer – it ensures perfect adhesion without damaging the surface of the element.

PVD metallization process and chemical reactions

Vacuum metallization of metal also uses numerous chemical phenomena that allow obtaining even more durable coatings. This mainly concerns gases such as nitrogen, oxygen and argon. The mentioned gases, introduced into the vacuum chamber, modify the properties of the metal layer applied using the vacuum technique to the selected material. Thanks to this, we influence the hardness and change the optical properties of the coating – e.g. we obtain different colors of the mirror coating.

Metal deposition in vacuum metallization – what raw materials are we talking about?

The most popular materials subjected to the vacuum metallization process are primarily: aluminum, stainless steel, chrome, brass, copper and titanium.

To sum up: vacuum metallization is an effective process of applying protective and decorative coatings to selected elements used in various industries: automotive, aviation, electronics. This is a beneficial solution that allows you to create beautiful decorative and protective coatings.

It is worth remembering that in the case of metals that naturally oxidize (brass, aluminum, copper), the metallization coating should be protected with a layer of protective varnish.
